Local Attractions Near the Castle
The Castle is conveniently located in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula (which is actually an island) making day trips super easy and convenient. There are four main towns to explore north of Houghton: Calumet (13 miles south/main business location), Eagle River (5 miles north/M26/very small), Eagle Harbor (12 miles north/M26/small), Copper Harbor (25 mi north/M26/small)
Local Things to See/DoNOTE: A few places in the Keweenaw only take cash. Also, check restaurant webpages for hours of operation as they change based on the season.

(short for Upper Peninsula)
Troll: People that live downstate or "Under the Bridge" (FYI... Michigan has two peninsulas connected by the Mackinaw Bridge) Pasty: A meat and potato meal wrapped in a buttery, flaky pastry shell. Originally made for on-the-go meals during the mining days but now come in a variety of flavors and fillers. The traditional pasty may or may not contain rutabaga and will be eaten with ketchup or I hear some prefer gravy?!? (insert Mr. Yuk!) Thimbleberry: It looks like a raspberry but is more tart and has much larger leaves and is EVERYWHERE in the Keweenaw. Highly recommend trying the Thimbleberry infused line of drinks at Carmelita's Mexican restaurant in Calumet (20 min away)! Chow-Chow: This locally made snack is used as both a cracker accompaniment and also a condiment for certain dishes. You can get it spicy or mild and each shop boasts a slightly different recipe. It's hard to describe but is somewhat like antipasto in a sweeter mustard based sauce. Keith loves it! It's growing on me... :) Roadside Sticks: Sometime in November, five foot high sticks magically appear along all the road ways in the Keweenaw. These snow sticks help the plows locate the edge of the roadway over the winter months. They magically disappear in April just as fast... Yooperlights/Yooperlites: Rocks the glow under black UV light. They can be found on this beach at night. We have imbedded them into the mosaics in both the Balcony and Turret showers. |
